PHON-A-THON
Thinking about Volunteering?
Experience the Independence Party Phon-a-thon!
Independents talking with other independents is at the core of building the independent political movement. Each month new volunteers have an opportunity to come together on a Saturday or Sunday with dozens of fellow independents from across the city, to learn more about the independent movement and spend a couple of hours in our citywide office helping to build it.
No previous experience is needed! Volunteers use a script or a poll to call Independence Party members and independents in other states, to get their input on the political reform issues and campaigns we are supporting, and invite them to participate further. The Phon-a-thon starts with a behind-the-scenes political briefing, and a short training.

Comments from Phon-a-thon participants:
- “I was terrified that people would ask me questions I couldn’t answer, but as soon as I polled the first person, I realized it was just about us talking with each other. I felt really powerful.”
- “I’ve been to IP meetings and read some articles, but I never really understood what “building from the bottom up” meant until I came to a Phonathon.”
- "At first I thought it would be like telemarketing calls and that really turned me off, but the script directs you to ask everyone if it is a good time to speak. We only wanted to talk to the people who are interested.”
- "The person I sat next to was really experienced and she encouraged me. I had a lot of fun.”
